Fixing isolated cells and stray background stitches

Inspect small regions, erase a stray cell and protect intentional highlights.

A small region is a place to look

Enable the small-region check and zoom into the marked areas. The check identifies connected same-color regions; it cannot decide whether a spot is a mistake. An eye highlight or a deliberate accent can be a single useful cell.

For this teaching example, four isolated background cells were added manually to a converted pattern and then erased. They sit at row 3, columns 3 and 48, and row 48, columns 3 and 48 (counting from 1). This is an editing demonstration, not evidence that the conversion algorithm produced those stray cells.

Digital pattern: Eraser practice: four added background specks
Before: four manually added background cells; 1308 filled cells.
Digital pattern: Eraser practice: background specks removed
After: those distractions erased; 1304 filled cells. The white eye details remain.

Make the smallest useful change

  1. Choose Erase and remove the unwanted cell. Empty cells no longer contribute to material counts.
  2. To change a cell instead, select the intended material and use the brush. A brush stroke can cover several cells.
  3. Undo returns the whole stroke. Check the full picture after each change, and redo only if the result is useful.

Color focus changes what you see, not the pattern or its counts. Use it to inspect one material without deleting the others.

Remove background without deleting every white cell

Select the background material and review its edge-connected count before using background removal. The operation removes matching cells connected to the grid edge through horizontal or vertical neighbors. Enclosed matching details remain; any matching detail connected to that edge region can be removed too.

Do not use whole-color deletion to clear a white background when the subject also contains white. That advanced action removes the selected material everywhere. Use Undo if needed and inspect the cat’s white eye details before saving.

Download the “before” JSON above, open it in the studio and erase the added background cells. Keep the eye highlights.
